"mavrick's Neck Mod"

This mod allows you to "bolt on" Harley front ends or trees that require 7" between triples. No machining of stem or counter boring bearings is needed. This mod takes bout 6 hours, it takes longer for the paint to dry.lol

Before we get started:
1. I'm really not an asshole.

2. I don't need a thousand "NOOBS" asking me if this is a hard MOD. If you read this and feel you need to ask, you have no business fucking with your neck.

3. I'm giving you as much detail as I can. Don't ask me where to get this or that, or is it cheaper here or there. I'm not a fuckin' search engine. Use "GOOGLE", I did. At least I'm telling you what to look for.

4. I'm sure there are better ways to do this, could have pulled motor and took frame to machine shop to use a mill, or drain fluids so you can turn the bike over instead of inverting the drill press, use a v-block and vise instead of using a center pin and cutting up my press table, and had a neck spacer made instead of buying one and then having it turned down, and bla fuckin bla bla. It took me bout a month of planning and getting the fuckin balls to do this, so there is a good chance I have already thought of it.

5. I will take suggestions and tips using basic tools like I used. I would have done this whole Mod in my living room, but my girl put her foot down when I brought in the welder and fire ext.

6. I do not need my grammar or spelling brought to my attention. This ain't a fuckin spelling bee!!!

Lets get started:
Pics are in my gallery pt-1 & pt-2
First you need is a portable drill press with laser sight, and grinding stones a cut off wheels. Also a SAWSALL or hacksaw. H.D. neck cup and bearing press. A chopper neck, got mine on ebay. Center pin for drill press, get this made at machine shop. A set of H.D. neck cups and bearings. (pt-1, pics 1,2,3,4,5,7)http://www.shadowriders.net/forums/v...do=view&g=2821

Measure the I.D. of your neck in several places, it varies a little. I figured mine at 1.643. The wall is not very thick so I think its distorted from the factory welding. Took chopper neck to local machine shop, turned mine down to 1.634". Chopper neck is 5-5/8" long, only turn down 5-1/8" need some meat below for bearing cup pin.(pt-1, pics 6,7) While there had em make pin for drill press. Mine was 1.630" for 5" long, bored to fit my drill press table, and then drilled and tapped 1/4-20.(pt-1, pic 5)

The necks on our spirits are longer than 7" and will not except HD neck bearings. Need to hack that shit off.(pt-1, pic 8)

Start by cutting top of neck 1/8' above weld.(pt-1, pic9)

Next I cut the fork lock tab off so press table would sit flat. Then pound pin in neck from the bottom using a socket so you dont damage the end that goes into press.(pt-1, pic 10)

Now cut notch in drill press table for clearance if needed, bolt it up, use ratchet strap to center laser on end of pin. Chuck up a grinding stone or cut off wheel and start grinding.(pt-1, pic 11)

Took me about an hour to grind down to weld. Remember take your time you are using tools in a way they were not designed. Use a machinist square to make sure you are grinding neck down square. When finished un bolt the shit, drive pin out from top down.(pt-1, pic12)

Put some duct tape around bottom of neck and mark about an 1/8" below end of chopper neck.(pt-1, pic 13)

Forgot to mention: the reason for cutting top and bottom an 1/8" long is because its hard to get a straight cut with sawzall. I would rather spend more time grinding than fucking up my frame. Cut off bottom bearing race and fork lock plate.(pt-1 pic 14)

Now take a half round file and debur inside of top neck. Drive pin from top down using a socket like you did last time, bolt press up. Use a ratchet strap hooked to tank mount to center laser on pin. Chuck up a tool and start grinding.(pt-1 pic15,16)

It took me about 2 hours to grind bottom. Cut off wheels were not made for grinding, but I tried more aggressive bits and the press started jumping around. Just take your fuckin time, the end result is worth it.

Pizza is a lot like pussy. Even when it's bad, it's good.

Part 2

Now its time to start welding. This is when the ole' lady said, " NO FUCKING WAY YOU ARE NOT WELDING IN THE LIVING ROOM!"

Next step is pressing chopper neck into frame neck. I used parts from my neck cup bearing press tool, some pvc pipe and 3/4" threaded rod.(pt-2 pic 17) The pvc is used to help center things up. Its cut into three pieces, so you can tighten, take one out, tighten, take one out and drive her home.

Take a half round file and debur the inside of the bottom of frame neck. Start chopper neck in from bottom, making sure you are straight. I dry pressed mine. Take your time and keep it straight.(pt-2 pic 18) Bottom it out and should look like this.(pt-2 pic19)
Now measure neck, if you do not have 5-5/8" you fucked up some where.

pt-2 pics 20 -28 are welding, filler and paint pics that we have all seen a thousand times.
Take a look at pics 21,22,23,24 gotta cap the hole. I bent and ground a piece of 1/8" flat stock for this.

Now press in neck cups using tool. If you are installing internal fork stops make sure you keep an eye on the lock tab or pin hole.(pt-2 pic 29)

Should have 7" now.(pt-2 pic 30)

Finished neck (pt-2 pic 31)

Forks mounted (pt-2 pic 32)

This is my first "How To" thread, hope there is enough info in here to help some one out. It actually took longer to make this post than to do the fuckin mod. With that being said, Merry X-mas to all and to all a good Fuckin nite! mav

thyx 4 comps

Thanks for the comps guys. Not knocking others, but to get a comp from a seasoned poster such as "mcvierh" kinda brought a tear to my eye. Thanks mc. I posted this mod to give a little back to this site, and maybe get a "STICKY" out of it. I have gotten a lot of info from here, the search button in the top right corner has been the best tool in my box.

This mod is not a hard one. Its one hell of a lot easier than the H.D rear wheel swap I'm in the process of. The hardest part is getting the fuckin balls to do it. Like I said in the begining of my post, I'm really not an asshole. When you are ready to do this mod, I mean fuckin ready. 1.) Cut the top of your neck off 1/8" above the factory weld. 2.) Have some one take a picture of you with a look of confidence next to your cut neck. Not a look like "what the fuck did I just do?". 3.) Send the pic to me. This will show me that you comitted to this mod. I will be more than happy to answer any questions and help you out. Depending on your location, I'd bring my shit to your place or yours to mine and work with you. I just do not have the time for "POSERS" or "DREAMERS".

With that being said, "Thanks again for the comps."

Nice job on the mod, Mav,

For those who can't get or afford raked trees, this would be a good alternative. Just takes time and patience...

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America ' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'
That is Honor, thank one for it.
