Cool 83 Shadow VT500C leisurely Spiff-Up

Hello everybody. I am new here.

Joe Lee from Down East Maine. Have been building a motorized bicycle to occupy my time and I have been gifted this 1983 Honda Shadow VT500C.

Overall not bad, everything seems to be in working order mechanically.

Some blemishes, but I am going to scrub all of it off when the weather improves.

Right after I got the new battery, I rode it and as I returned home the snow started falling... Living on the edge! Haha.

I was going to take off the carbs and clean them, but luckily the PO told me she did twice last year. There is a bit of hesitation with throttle response and it is hard starting sometimes (Usually after it has warmed up already) Which could be coils.

Big question: Is there crank case ventilation going into the bottom of the air box? My filter is very oily and I notice oil bubbling into the bottom of the box while cranking it over. Any ideas???

yes there is a crank case vent. on my 86 there's a huge tube from the rear cyl that connects to the air box (on my bike, the air box is the frame) Not sure why it would be bubbling into box unless oil is over filled. IF you have hard starting and hesitation, the carbs sound like they need to be removed and cleaned again.

Today I let her warm up for a good amount of time, gladly to find the temp gauge works, and there is no hesitation once it has warmed up. I seemed to forget the fact that being 35* outside lately makes for longer warm up...

Also, somehow the PO had neglected to put air in the tires between the time I rode it last summer (and mentioned it promptly) and the time I got it.
Soooo a bit of air and the ride is muuuuch better. (Can't believe there was only 10psi in both... Yikes!

Luckily the tires are around 2 years old. The bike has 30,899 miles!
