noob rant

Hello fellow Shades.. small introduction: Let me say ive been a member basically since i first got the bike. I am a noob among noobs. Pretty much the only thing ive really done is oil changes up to (slightly before) this point. For whatever reason, prolly part due to my ocd, but every time, it was like, "ok, so what do i do.. " and overthinking everysingle little detail. I cant help but feel like an irresponsible vehicle owner in that sense. I dont want to have to take my bike in, for basically anything, unless absolutely mandated. Not to mention, all of the other noob bretheren on here have inspired me much.
I havnt been on much since first coming on, because i got overwhelmed pretty quick. Rode stock for a few years... This 3rd year, i had a fork seal leak, and i did end up taking it in. Although, i am quite willing to attempt to do it myself, althouh i still feel like id like to have a bit mentorship from my one mechanic buddy whilst doing certain things. I also still need my own bike jack- but id prolly end up doing most of the work at his garage, as his is bigger, and i need to have a car parked in mine, and it would greatly affect working space. I have to bring the bike back to the shop that did the forks because they leak again. The guy at the shop said its because i used higher weight oil-
I upgraded to progressive springs, and went with their 10wt, and i also went with OEM dust/oil shields. I read to stay oem with those, but am going to try the Allballs. Since he will have the forks off, im just gonna take them and have try and paint them myself. However, i still want to paint the tripple trees and levers and master cylinder. So that my be my excuse to mess with the front myself.. let me say i am a bit intimadated...

Let me back up a tiny bit now: i finally decided (around the time i noticed the fork leak) that i wanted to do my air intake. I ordered a Scooter Assassins pod a while back, and a 6sigma jet kit... ended up going back and forth on TJs site, and decided to go the VS route. Ordered that, and the jets, along with the new air/fuel screw from him. In watching his videos, and asking various bike mechanics about jetting, and getting numerous different answers (and personalities), i was further cemented in the desire of self efficiency.

My buddy pulled the carb the first time, and did the jets, and i then took it to the shop for the forks. since this was my first time, i didnt know how "seated" was supposed to feel on the screw, and was affraid to go all the way in. Upon doing that, i then decided to pull the carb myself. I ended up trying, i believe 8 diffrent settings.. "stock" for me, with this bike was with a vance and hines, stock air box, and a stage 1 dynojet: 45 slow (stock, i believe) 130main, and clip on the 3rd notch. not sure what the air/fuel screw was at, however i know it was changed because it was already accessible. In fiddling with the carbs, i again had the thought of how lucky i am to have gotten such a well taken care of bike.. ive basiclly tried the first 3 of the 4 mains i have, and had 1 and 2 shims on the needle, with it on the 3rd clip. I am currently on 48s, 148m, clip on 4th notch, and air screw im constantly fiddling with still, but between 2-2.75 i believe... i also have my idle kinda low, any lower and it dies when i blip it, any higher, and it doesnt sound as nice.. I have not read the plugs yet, im not sure when theyve last been changed. I also havnt ridden any other shadows, so im not sure how theyre supposed to ride. I have no bogging, its pretty responsive, it sounds nicer, i have no decel noise, i did before.. Once with this setting, i have had a carb pop- its like a "poof" i may go back to clip on the 3rd notch, i almost feel like 3/4 had more pep then. When i had the 142 main in, it wasnt sluggish, but decel from like 65-70, the bike would die.. jumped to 4th notch, and 148.and it doesnt do it. one thing, and again-ive never ridden any other shadows, but when i wide open it, the "go" isnt instant, theres no apparent engine hesitatin, although i cant hear over the pipes. and theres no bogging, it just takes a second for the rear wheel to respond, if that makes sense. i presumed hesitation meant that when you gave the throttle, the engine itself would hesiatate to rev, i almost feel like that high end delay is just inherent.

eh, sorry for the incredibly long rant... I am looking forward to this off season to hopefully grace my fellow readers with a nice build thread to glance at..

"stock" when i got it..

working on the carbs, didnt use any of the sigma kit, nor did i drill the slide hole, or cut a coil. one hole almost loked like it had been. i want to order TJs slide cover, and bolts, but i may just send it to him-that bath makes it looks very nice!

after my first time getting to this point all by myself, lol! in my buddies garage- He was head mechanic for Grave Digger.

My mods: VS, jet kit, painted side covers, removed signals/chaing cover/front sprocket cover/front fender, relocated plate.

The Blazer in the first pic belongs to the guy i bought the bike from, the Jeep in the last pic is mine- i no longer have my slammed s10

I also have a monoshock from jimworx, and the shop said the holes were too small, but the shop wouldnt drill them out for me.

I also have an unopened pod filter for a single carb if anyone is interested..
sorry for the great wall of text! i look forward to tearing this cyka apart, and making it mine!!

I suggest you start with checking out the spark plugs and note their condition.

Repost and BRIEFLY state your current settings and symptoms.

Yes, I will be more brief, appologies about that. When I go to do that, should I replace all 4 and read them, or just one until I have it tuned, then replace all? If they read either lean or rich, can I clean them off and reuse them? And when reading, I do one at idle, and check, then at the different throttle stages, successively, and kill the engine when at each stage?

Thanks for the response!

Just pull the plugs first and replace them if they look all worn out and the electrode is beyond salvageable.

I think you're changing too many things at once. It's too difficult to diagnose anything by doing it that way.

"....and had 1 and 2 shims on the needle, with it on the 3rd clip"

If you're using a needle where the height can be adjusted by moving the clip to different notches you shouldn't be using shims at the same time. Also, is it 3rd clip counting from the bottom-to-top or from top-to-bottom?

I have changed a bunch, but wasn't clear on all the individual settings, I did
Make most changes one at a time. At first I didn't know shims were only for stock needles, I thought it was just for fine tunes.
This is my current setup, I just rode back to the shop and got stuck in some rain- first time with no fender, and stack.

02 vlx
Velocity stack (strack and jets from tj)
Vance and Hines cruzers
48 slow
148 main
Clip 4th from top
Air screw was between 2-3.. Messing with it a bit.

I have whiteish smoke I could see when it was idling to 1/4 or so. Had a few carb pops. (I get those on decel/throttle closing- it feels like between .5/.25- close). Havnt checked plugs yet. No bogging, or sputtering, or surging. Just that slight hesitation that I'm not sure is normal. That feels like it's between .5/.75 -WOT. it's not in engine or exhaust sound, that sounds fine. Just takes a second for it to catch up. Everything else feels pretty peppy and snappy. I planed to possibly remove the carb and tinker, but since we have rain for the next few, havin the forks fixed Afsin. Was hoping to powder coat the forks and trees at this time, but I may have to wait cause of the shop..

I think your jetting is off. Yes 48 Idle as per TJ's video. The clip should be on the third notch. You start with the 142 in the kit from tj and work up if needed. But that should be a ball park. Thats what I have on mine, it was night and day better than. What a shop did when I asked them to do it. McV and BE came up with those setting also. They helped the most as far as what i've done.

When I fort got the kit I talked to a mechanic who said I shouldn't need to jet because of the stage one- so my first trial run was with the VS 45s 130m and clip on 3rd notch with one shim(like I said, I didn't know at first) that's how I learned what the term 'boggy' means. Or at least I can only surmise.. Ran like shit. To be expected though.

When I did the jetting the first time with my buddy, he suggested I jump to the 148m. I did, and that's when I thought I had the air fuel mix seated. So I'm not sure how many turns, but ran ok. Then I decided to do it myself. Kept the slow, stoped the main to 142 which is the smallest ( 142, 145, 148, 150). And put 2 shims on per his instruction. That's when I realized I prolly should move the clip, but kept it on 3, with 2 shims. Not sure if this is an airfuel thing, but id hit 65-75, and the bike would either die there, or upon decel.. Couldn't tell. But I was testing it on a road with a top of 45, so I was kinda pushing it.

I then jumped back up to the 148, and removed shims but moves the clip down.
I had a few other small changes I tried: if I remember correctly, 2 shims and 142 also had slow or boggy .5-.75. I dropped my bike off yesterday, over a week from when he said he ordered the seals. I'm sick of my baby sitting at a shop. The only real thing that scares me about the forks is finding a proper jack to use, filling the oil, and getting the forks back together with the new springs. I guess the guy had to go and make spacers cause he said the ones on the kit didn't fit. Also, If I decide to paint the shocks later, and decide to fully remove the forks, not tape around the boots- does that require new seals.. Basically, anytime they're removed, despite age, should they be replaced? Last question: my friend says it's bad to paint the engine due to trapping heat.. I would like to paint mine, but the main part, not the top covers or side covers, but the entire middle.

When I get it back, I going back to 142m, clip back to 3rd notch, no shims..hopefully by Monday, weathers supposed to be nice again.
