How to install the BILSKI taillight Mod

Here is my step by step process for the benefit of everyone who wants to know how to pull the lunchbox and replace it with something else.

This project took me about 2 hours and a single trip to Home Depot.
------------------------------------------------------
2002 Honda Shadow Spirit Brake light wiring
green = ground.
brown = running light.
Green / Yellow = BRAKE LIGHT!

Cat Eye from Bilski
Black = ground.
Yellow = running light.
Red = BRAKE LIGHT!
------------------------------------------------------
The tools you will need:
THROW AWAY THE BULB that came with it and get an automotive bulb 1157. (larger, but will fit.)
4mm, 5mm, 6mm hex
11mm and 14mm wrenches
8mm, 10mm, 11mm, 12mm sockets
Screwdrivers, Cutters/Strippers, Multimeter, Soldering Iron, knife, heatshrink, a lighter and some electrical tape.
-----------------------------------------------------

1. Remove the seat. (2 Hex bolts a knuckle on the fender and tongue under the tank.)

2. You will find the wiring harness just behind the tank and see where it comes out of the 2 holes in the fender. Disconnect all of them from the main harness. There are turn signal wires and brake wires. They are all color coded, and easily matched back up again.

3. Remove the 4 fender bolts (2 on each side), lower the fender onto the tire, and slip it down and off the tire.

4. Find some cardboard or a table with a towel on it so you don't scratch things up and lay the fender down on it and start ripping the nuts and bolts out. The anchor peice that the seat bolts into, holds the fender frame to the fender and will need to be removed to ease the moving of the wiring.

5. Remove the wiring from the frame and split open the wire sleeve at the light end so that you can cut off and splice the new light in. When you make the splice, I suggest you solder it. and when you do, fan them out, solder the tops, and then flip it over, so that you can solder the bottom half of the wiring. Make sure you slide shrink wrap over one side of each before soldering. Tape them, shrink wrap them, and very delicately melt the shrink wrap with the lighter. TEST THE WIRES! Plug them into the connection points and make sure that the brake light turns on with power, and lights up bright when you hit the brakes. Wrap the wire sleeve back around the wiring, tape it all back up so that its protected end to end.

6. Bolt the Bilski mod onto the frame using the existing center nut and the two bolts provided with the Bilski. Feed the brakelight wiring through the mod, through the frame, and back out to the connection point.

7. Focusing on the brake light, when you put it in and tighten down the screws/bolts, make sure that there is space between the bulb and the plastic framing.

8. Slide the entire frame and fender back up the tire and set it in position. If you can get someone to help you lift it up, great, otherwise, hold the front with one hand, and balance the mod off one knee as you line up the 4 frame bolts (2 on each side). Bolt the fender back to the frame, and replace the seat and you're ready to roll.
