I think part of probelm is your choice of work location, being in an artillery firing location is bound to make things shake. No wonder the tappets fell out. Not to mention all that fucking noise giving a person a head ache. Just keep at. You'll get there.

haha, the noise only bothers you until your hearing goes :P

actually, my dad creatively acquired that sign when he was in the Army back in the early 70s... :P He says they were cleaning up an old range site, and it was supposed to go into a dumpster.. I'm glad he decided to keep it, love that thing.. :P

I get it now!!! one baby step forward.... into a fucking wall! EVERY TIME! :P

lol

bought a nut and bolt to get the spark plug sleeves out.. took me longer to drive to the store than it did to get em both out.. now the book says to remove the cam gears, but then also makes it very clear NOT to rotate the crank while either or both of the camshafts are out...

uhm.... the cam gear bolts are 180 degrees apart from each other on the gear.. so when I can get to one of them, the other one is inside the head.. I can't get them both out without rotating the engine... wtf?

I know, Pics or it didn't happen :P

Fuck your expensive ass 27mm Hex!!!

Alos, just cause the image was in the same folder on my camera.. the two best pussies I've ever lived with :P

It's rare that they lay that close to each other, brother sister pair, Hemi is normally a big Asshole and fights with Hidey when she tries to lay by him..

Update:

Got the case full apart last night.. only thing left is the output drive shaft.. there's a giant spring on it that needs to be compressed so you can remove the snap ring holding it in place..

Either going to jimmy rig something to do that job, or bring it into a local shop and see if they'll pop it out for me.. hopefully for free since it shouldn't take more than a few seconds to do..

anyway.. pics or it didn't happen right?

one camshaft out :)

hmmm... seems like an awful lot of red shit (rust) and a LOT of carbon build up considering that judging by the grime on the outside, this cylinder was replaced sometime in the last few years (front cylinder was pretty clean on the outside, but rear cylinder had decades of grime and shit on it..)

WTF? are you shitting me? what was that your survival stash of water spot? I've never seen rust and calcium or whatever that is, combine to form a sheet like that..

aforementioned "sheet" is in the top right of this pic..

gotta find out if I can just hone the cylinder and clean up the piston face or if i'm in the market for a new P&C now :/

another shot just cause I'm a photo whore :P

Rear cylinder head looks a lot better...

Continued..

So does the P&C..

That's a bit more what I expected from an engine that "was running strong! no issues at all!"

both P&C's and everything else from the top end removed

figured out a way to hold the crank still while loosening the bolt :P

Sorry for the shitty picture.. what that is, is a "Stinger" exhaust for a VW Beetle... being used as a ratchet extension so I could get some more force on the bolt to bust it loose :P When I was younger, i'd use dad's jack handle.. I don't have a jack with a handle, but I do have an exhaust I don't like :P

in case you have no idea what i'm talking about.. the long tapered pipe sticking up is the thing I'm using as an extension..

Anyway, back to the engine..

here ya go without the alternator gear thing in place...

Continued again..

Shift lever and the other gear thing out... you like my technical names?

everything out of the right side of the case..

wtf is that shit in the coolant pump area? looks like nuclear snot, but i assume it's crystallized coolant..

book said something along the lines of "use needlenose pliers to work the pipe off the oil pump and remove the pump.." yeah, you can only rotate that pipe upwards maybe a 1/2 an inch, so the tab never clears the bolt hole.. No idea how they expected that to come out, I just left it in until I split the case..

Speaking of splitting the case...

looks decently clean inside..

WAIT A MINUTE! WTF is all this shit? looks like gravel, but i'm thinking it's some kinda nylon shit... I have no idea.. also some silicon gasket crap in there too...
