Good stuff BE! I am "planning" on doing exhaust for the VLX, but first I gotta get time in the garage ... ... Then I gotta finish up my wiring!

Families and work ... always in the way. Sheesh.

Being that you have become the shade tree, redneck engineering genius around these parts that means a lot to me. I also know how you feel about family and work!!! I love all my kids, but man they are just so demanding...always wanting to eat and needing clothes...needy little critters!

I got a question about this. I was going to start modding my stock pipes today. I pulled the covers off the front and rear and noticed the rear has a smaller OD. Then when i checked the ID of the front, it seemed to not be consistent with its OD. In seeing BE's post u stated that the front has a pipe within a pipe, WTF. I was planning on making the rear pipe at a 42mm OD (so it fits the flange perfect) and the front 48mm OD straight pipes out. Can I do this or does this bike need the smaller pipes?

See if some of what I did helps you:

If your bike is free-flowing (rejetted and modified air intake system) you'll want to do it right; you need to eliminate that smaller pipe within a pipe. Plenty of riders keep that pipe-pipe, but I'll swear to you that the sound is so much better when it's modified, and obviously less restriction. I fabricated some in-pipe baffles which assist with back-pressure and tone down the brassiness (I show these in that thread linked above). It's a truly sweet sound!

Thanks for the info. Nah it's not free flow yet, I was going to do it all together, exh air jets. When I pulled the exhausts off and noticed the smaller pipes, I stopped everything and started searching, then asked above. My friend was like screw it just chop it and let's go. But I need the bike so I didn't want to risk it.

So in the end it might be best to put some sort of baffles in? The loudness I don't give a rats ass about, my neighbors can kiss my ass. Here in Italy, the garages are underground. So as it is now with a mod to the stocks that the owner did, I came to find out, the garages are sweet sounding. I go no baffle, wake the dead down there lol.
