New tank?

03 ACE 750 and looking to swap the tank. I dropped the dash and painted it all black. I have a plasti-dip stripe for now, but it'll come off next month. Has anybody here swapped their tank for another tank? I wanted to get rid of the elevated center-full cap and the mounts for the dash, but I don't know what tanks "work" with the bike. I don't have an aversion to mounting a new tank, but I wanted to see some pictures of some other bikes with a different tank. I mounted my speedo on the bars, too much shiny stuff on the tank was blinding me on my rides. Anyway, I appreciate any help you can give.

Nothing is a direct swap. Some have adapted a VTX tank to fit, others some after market. Biggest obstacle is the tunnel to fit the backbone. You have to mod one or the other.

You can always add a flush cap, and shave and fill where the speedo was. That is what I done.

Yeah, roger that. I'm not looking for a direct bolt-up but can't find a tank that I like and don't have a welder for the mods. I guess I could build-up a bunch of jb weld or bindi but I'm not sure how that much filler would hold up. For my tank it's just a little spot near the cap that needs to be filled, but if really love a flush-mount cap. I know a guy with a mig welder (doesn't have gas) and could probably borrow it to weld up the holes. Would I need to line the tank afterward? Is the tank stainless or mild steel? I guess I need to know more before I continue this project. What did you use for your speedo housing, gb?

You can JB Weld a flush mount HD pop up cap in your existing one. You could bondo or JB weld a plate over the old mounting location of the speedo. Doc Tom who did mine here in Germany used lead. Never have to worry about cracking. The tank is mild steel. Search on here for blackwidow rider and check out his work.

For the mount I used 4.5" stainless steel and had a piece of SS sheet metal welded to the bottom and then I polished it.

Photos link and the 2014 Mods folder has pics of the process.
