loose exhaust heat shield

My upper heat shield (on the rear cylinder exhaust) has come loose. I see in the tech manual that I can tap it with a plastic or rubber hammer to remove it to replace the rubber protectors. However, it doesn't say which way to tap it. I assume it should be tapped forward from the rear, but would like to know for sure. Has anyone ever removed the heat shield--if so please advise on which direction to tap it, and any bits of wisdom on getting it back on. The local Honda shop said that I needed 3 new rubber protectors which I now have, but they couldn't tell me which way to tap it. Probably don't want to use them for any maintenance.
